While most applications today using blast cabinets require operator hand held guns for directional blasting, there are some parts that, because of their small size and quantity, can be blasted in batch loads by using a "Tumble Barrel" or "Tumble Basket" machine.

Tumble Barrel Machines

Tumble Barrel machines usually have the barrel attached to the cabinet door or sidewall. Rotation of the barrel produces the Random Part Mix. The parts are blasted simultaneously using a stationary blast gun that is directed inside the rotating barrel. This type of processing produces the fastest random part mix, due to the shape of the barrel and the processing angle of the barrel which is perpendicular. During the barrel rotation process, the parts are automatically brought towards the center of the barrel where the blasting takes place. If the barrel is mounted on a side access door the parts can be loaded and unloaded, outside the machine with very little operator involvement. Variable speed barrel or basket rotation is beneficial because, it allows each part shape and size to rotate at their optimal tumble speed.

Tumble Barrel machines usually operate with parts 5 inches in length and shorter, in batch part loads up to 50-60 pounds. Smaller barrels will process smaller part loads but, it is important to remember that the parts are what protect the barrel during the blasting process and the barrel should always be sized accordingly to allow continuous part feed in front of the blast gun.

Tumble Basket Machines

Tumble Basket machines usually have a fixed or removable basket with an open top, mounted inside the machine, at 45 degrees to perpendicular. This machine will process larger and longer parts, approximately 5-7 inches but, due to the processing angle of the basket, the part random mix requires smaller processing loads and longer processing time periods. Often times Tumble Basket machines have a less densely packed basket due to the part size and shape.

Tumble Basket machines are usually less costly than barrel type machines but, it's truly the part shape, that decides which machine will be best suited for your application.

Tumble Blast Options & Machines

Media Blast manufactures 4 Tumble Barrel machine options (TB-1, 2, 3, and 4) and 2 complete Tumble Basket machines (TB-5 and TB-5 Cyclone).

Tumble Barrel machine options are available for addition to Media Blast machines. The machine model is determined by the abrasive size to be used in the system. Adding the required Tumble Barrel option, TB-1, 2, 3 or 4, to the selected machine model, completes the machine. This allows a Tumble Barrel option to be attached to a wide variety of wet or dry machines utilizing any abrasive size/type.

Read the features included with each Tumble Barrel description and you will see that everything is included and assembled to create a truly complete machine package. Pricing is determined by adding the cost of the Tumble Barrel option to the proper siphon abrasive machine model and cabinet size.

The Tumble Basket machines come in two completely assembled configurations. The TB-5 for 0-150 mesh abrasive size and the TB-5 Cyclone for 150-325 mesh abrasive size. These machines are available only as complete machine models because, the basket drive assembly is attached directly to the cabinet hopper assembly and this requires construction of a special cabinet configuration.

TB-1 Tumble Barrel Option: Almost any Media Blast manual blasting machine can be outfitted with a TB-1 option. This normally requires a 48-inch wide cabinet so the operator station can be off-set to one side. The smaller barrel size is designed for smaller part sizes that can be hard to hold. Most TB-1 barrels operate with a volume of parts that would fit inside a 3 pound coffee can or smaller. This option can save time for those smaller fasteners or hard to hold smaller parts that are used to assemble new manufactured items. TB-2 Tumble Barrel Option: Almost any Media Blast manual blasting machine can be outfitted with a TB-2 option.This normally requires a 48-inch wide cabinet so the operator station can be off-set to one side. The larger drive and barrel sizes are designed for smaller part sizes that often, can be hard to hold in higher volumes. This option has the 1-1/2" diameter barrel mounting shaft that permits part loads weighing 25-40 pounds. While larger TB barrels are available on the TB-3 and TB-4 option, the TB-2 still allows for manual machine operation for regular blasting with the same drive assembly and less costly added items. This option uses the standard machine dust collector cleaning assembly but, does not include the timed cleaning cycle.
TB-3 Tumble Barrel Option: The TB-3 Tumble Barrel Option has no manual machine operation built into the cabinets. The cabinet is square for production processing. This option includes the larger barrel size, up to 22 inches in diameter, for load weights up to 60 pounds. The volume of parts for the standard barrel size, 22-inch, is 1/4 to 1/3 cubic feet and the dust collector has a full 440 square feet of automatically cleaned dust collector filter area. This machine is used for volume-production work created by fastener shops, heat treating shops and other high volume applications. The barrel has the fastest mixing design facilitating the fastest random mixing speed. The faster the random mix, the shorter the blasting cycle. If smaller production quantities are required, the TB-3 has smaller barrel sizes available. The barrel sizes should be matched to the part volume size for optimum barrel protection.
TB-4 Tumble Barrel Option: All TB-4 Tumble Barrel Options include two tumble barrels on one machine. Often this is considered as the highest production tumble barrel machine but, two TB-3 machines will out-produce one TB-4 machine with two tumble barrels. The first reason is cycle time, two TB-3 machines can be loaded at different times unlike, the TB-4, that requires loading of the barrels at the same time, even if one cycle is complete. TB-4 machines are often supplied with two different barrel sizes. One large size for 50-60 pound high-volume loads and one smaller barrel size for short loads. Short loads can be processed inside a large barrel size but, without the normal volume, the barrel is not fully protected and higher barrel screen wear is possible. All Media Blast barrel screens are replaceable without replacement of the processing barrel. In addition, two TB-3 machines have double the dust collector capacity of a single TB-4 machine. Any Media Blast machine can be purchased less the dust collector for operation on an existing central dust collector, self-contained units that include the dust collector, can be easily moved to another location if required. The TB-4 is designed for applications where the part volume can vary greatly and the TB-4 can include different barrel sizes to facilitate "Short Loads" or the same barrel size can be used on both sides to allow for barrel service of one barrel while, the remaining barrel is still processing parts.

Tumble Blast Standard Model Specifications:

Tumble Barrels Machines are options added to almost any Wet or Dry Media Blast machine to create the Tumble Barrel model. While other features also change, the optional price includes the changes which makes pricing simple and easy. Models vary according to abrasive type, abrasive mesh size and even the delivery of wet or dry abrasive. This also allows for barrel diameter sizing for daily production selection.

Tumble Basket machines require a special cabinet layout and special cabinet size which creates a standalone model for the two different abrasive mesh sizes. The N-200 TB-5 for 0-150 mesh and the N-200 TB-5 Cyclone for 150-220 mesh. Because of the basket design there is no wet machine available for this model.
